Jesuit 9 Westlake 8

Updated: Feb 24, 2020

StickStarReport InterDistrict Game Recap

Saturday afternoon at Postell Stadium senior attackman Tommy Hovivian tallied a hat trick, including the game winner, to help the Dallas Jesuit Rangers defeat the Westlake Chaps 9-8 in a highly anticipated interdistrict matchup.

Also contributing for the Rangers were senior Billy Metz with one goal and three assists, and Curran Rose with two goals and an assist.

Early season interdistrict games have become an important measuring stick as quality competition provides tangible experience prior to the counters of district play. Last weekend we saw Jesuit defeat a quality Woodlands squad and now they were looking to make it 2-0 against programs that start with the letter Dubya.

For the Chaps senior attackman Brayden Duncan tallied a hat trick, while Bryce Walker finished twice. Ethan Burke also contributed with a goal and two assists, while Will Hamlin and Ben Salazar both scored once as well.

Westlake came out of the gate up 3-1, but Jesuit was able to tie it up at 3’s by the end of the 1st. Heading into halftime Jesuit led by a bucket, 6-5. To maintain their one goal advantage the Rangers scored with 2.1 seconds left in the 3rd to go up 7-6.

To round out the scoring for the Rangers Andrew Martin and Sam Teachout both had one goal and one assist, while Tilt Fernandez also added a tally.

When you look at the Statewide hierarchy Jesuit and Westlake sit near the top, as both teams advanced to the Final 4 in 2019 and look to build towards that goal once again. Jesuit came out Saturday and played well, possessing the ball, being patient on offense, and converting their opportunities. Westlake matched up well with the Rangers but they just weren’t as clean as they needed to be on that day.

For the Rangers, Daniel LePino was solid in cage. The reclassified junior transfer made a ton of quality saves down the line, including the game winning save on Bryce Walker. The exceptionally skilled lefty had a great opportunity on a set look out of their timeout, but just couldn't bury it.

In 2020 the Chaps aren’t going to sneak up on anyone. Everyone has them circled on their calendar and know exactly how dangerous they can be. On Saturday they were just a little off. Not as crisp as they would like on offense, and just a little slow rotating on defense. That's fine, it's early. The Chaps would round into form the next day defeating a solid Southlake squad 9-5. When the Chaps did start to get shorties on their favorable matchups towards the end of the game everything started to click, and the ball started to move. Westlake is going to be a tough out for everyone, they should be tons of fun to watch this season.
